General Registration Stages
Each scholarship program's process may differ, but the flow is generally the same. First, decide your destination country and study program matching your background and career plans — don't just pick a popular country; make sure your desired program is actually available. Second, find matching scholarship programs and read the organizer's official site for open programs, requirements, benefits, and schedules.
Third, list each scholarship's requirements and compare them with your situation to see which documents still need preparing. Fourth, register through the organizer's official portal, complete all selection stages, and await the announcement. If accepted, proceed to university admission, visa processing, medical checkups, and departure preparation.
Mandatory Documents and Language Requirements
Documents almost always required: diploma, transcripts, CV, language certificate, recommendation letters, personal statement or motivation essay, and passport. Don't wait until near the deadline since some documents take long to issue — such as diploma legalization or lecturer recommendation letters.
Commonly used English certificates: IELTS minimum 6.5 or TOEFL iBT minimum 80. Non-English-speaking countries have special rules, e.g., JLPT N3 for Japan, DELF/DALF B2 for France, or HSK 4 for Mandarin. Make sure scores are still valid when you apply.
Popular Scholarship Program Examples
Programs most sought by Indonesian students: LPDP for overseas study (master's/doctoral), DAAD for Germany with a scholarship database filterable by level and field, Erasmus Mundus for joint master's programs in Europe, and Turkiye Burslari for Turkey.
For SMA/SMK graduates, there is Beasiswa Garuda. Wave II in 2026 opened registration 25 May-25 June 2026, followed by administrative selection, the Scholastic Aptitude Test on 15-30 July 2026, and announcement on 5 August 2026. Requirements include Indonesian citizenship in grade 12, achievements over the last three years, IQ minimum 110, and SAT minimum 1,170 or taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Coverage is comprehensive: tuition, monthly living costs, visa, insurance, and transport tickets.
Tips to Pass Selection
Selection stages generally include administrative screening, academic or aptitude tests, document assessment, and interviews. The key to passing administration is complete and valid documents — one missing file can disqualify you. For essays and personal statements, highlight a clear study plan and commitment to contribute after returning home, not just a list of achievements.
Avoid relying on social media posts alone since requirements and schedules can change; always verify on official sites. Start preparing 6-12 months before the deadline, especially for English tests and hunting LoAs from target campuses.
