Calvin Verdonk's Historic Champions League Debut
LONDON — Indonesian football history was made at the Emirates Stadium in the early hours of Wednesday (14/10/2026, WIB). Indonesia national team left-back Calvin Verdonk officially became the first Indonesian citizen (WNI) to play in the UEFA Champions League when LOSC Lille visited Arsenal on matchday 2 of the 2026/2027 league phase.
The historic moment came in the 78th minute. Lille coach Davide Ancelotti sent Verdonk on for Romain Perraud with the visitors already 3-0 down. Alongside him, veteran striker Olivier Giroud replaced Ayase Ueda. From that substitution until full time, Lille did not concede again.

How the Match Went: Arsenal vs Lille 3-0
The first half ended goalless. Arsenal dominated the attacks through chances from Bruno Guimaraes and Mikel Merino, but Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer stood firm. Lille even had a goal from Ayase Ueda in the 23rd minute, only for it to be ruled out by VAR for offside.
The deadlock broke after the restart. Arsenal struck three times in seven minutes: Jurrien Timber opened the scoring in the 64th minute, Eberechi Eze doubled the lead three minutes later, and Bukayo Saka sealed the 3-0 win in the 71st minute. The result gives Arsenal six points from two wins, while Lille remain pointless after two matches.
Verdonk's Debut Stats: Solid in 12 Minutes
Although he played only about 12 minutes, Verdonk's Champions League debut was solid. The 29-year-old recorded 16 touches, 6 accurate passes, 3 successful tackles, and won 3 of 4 duels. The performance earned him a 6.2 FotMob rating.
Just as importantly, Verdonk helped shore up Lille's previously fragile left flank. After he replaced Perraud, no more Arsenal goals went past the Lille goal until the final whistle.
Calvin Verdonk's Profile: From Dordrecht to the Indonesia National Team
Calvin Verdonk was born in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, on 26 April 1997. A product of the Feyenoord academy, he built his career at PEC Zwolle and NEC Nijmegen before joining LOSC Lille in 2025 on a three-year contract.
His naturalization as an Indonesian citizen was completed in 2024. He debuted for the Indonesia national team in the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against the Philippines, and has since become one of Garuda's defensive mainstays.
What Verdonk's Debut Means for Indonesian Football
Before Verdonk, Emil Audero and Kevin Diks had also tasted the Champions League atmosphere. But both played while still Dutch and Italian nationals — not as Indonesian players. Verdonk is the first to step onto Europe's most elite club stage carrying an Indonesian passport.
For Indonesian football, those 12 minutes were more than a substitute appearance. They proved that Indonesian players can now reach the stage watched by billions around the world — and open the door for the next generation.
