Know Your Enemy: What Bathroom Limescale Is
Limescale is a mineral deposit from water, mainly calcium, that accumulates on surfaces and hardens over time. Combined with soap residue and grime, it makes bathrooms look dull and less hygienic.
The areas most prone to limescale are those regularly exposed to water: floors, walls near the shower, faucets, bathtubs, sinks, and toilets. Tile grout is also a favorite spot for mold to grow and turn black. Cleaning regularly keeps the bathroom pleasant to look at and healthier.
Three Reliable Weapons: Vinegar, Baking Soda, and Citric Acid
White vinegar is a natural ingredient that dissolves mineral scale effectively. Pour it into a spray bottle, spray it directly onto scaled areas, let it sit for 15-20 minutes so the vinegar softens the scale, then scrub gently with a brush and rinse with water.
For thicker scale, make a paste of baking soda and a little water. Apply it to the scaled area, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then scrub. Baking soda also helps remove unpleasant bathroom odors. Combining the two is even stronger: sprinkle baking soda over the scaled area, then spray with vinegar. The resulting chemical reaction helps break down scale quickly.
The cheapest weapon is citric acid. Wet the scaled ceramic surface, sprinkle citric acid powder evenly, let it sit for 15-30 minutes so the acid softens the calcium, then scrub in circular motions and rinse with running water.
Scrubbing Technique and Prevention
No matter how good the cleaner is, scale will not come off completely without scrubbing. Use a hard-bristled brush for floors and an old toothbrush for small gaps like tile corners or faucet edges. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as it can damage surfaces.
After the scale lifts, rinse with clean water and dry the surface with a cloth. A completely dry surface prevents new scale from forming.
To keep scale from building up, clean the bathroom at least 2-3 times a week, focusing on parts often exposed to water and soap. If using commercial chemical cleaners, always wear gloves and a mask because the fumes are sharp and can irritate the skin.
