Fajr Prayer Intention

Intention is a pillar of prayer that determines its validity. Its place is in the heart, and voicing it is recommended to strengthen one's resolve. The intention is made together with the opening takbir.

Here is the Fajr prayer intention (2 rak'ahs):

أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ الصُّبْحِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ أَدَاءً لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى

Usholli fardhosh shubhi rok’ataini mustaqbilal qiblati adaa’an lillaahi ta’aalaa. Meaning: “I intend the obligatory Fajr prayer, two rak'ahs, facing the qibla, for Allah the Almighty.”

Dhuhr and Asr Prayer Intentions

Dhuhr intention (4 rak'ahs): أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ الظُّهْرِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ أَدَاءً لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى — “Usholli fardhodh dhuhri arba’a roka’aatin mustaqbilal qiblati adaa’an lillaahi ta’aalaa.” Meaning: “I intend the obligatory Dhuhr prayer, four rak'ahs, facing the qibla, for Allah the Almighty.”

Asr intention (4 rak'ahs): أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ الْعَصْرِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ أَدَاءً لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى — “Usholli fardhol ‘ashri arba’a roka’aatin mustaqbilal qiblati adaa’an lillaahi ta’aalaa.” Meaning: “I intend the obligatory Asr prayer, four rak'ahs, facing the qibla, for Allah the Almighty.”

Maghrib and Isha Prayer Intentions

Maghrib intention (3 rak'ahs): أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ الْمَغْرِبِ ثَلاَثَ رَكَعَاتٍ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ أَدَاءً لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى — “Usholli fardhol maghribi tsalaatsa roka’aatin mustaqbilal qiblati adaa’an lillaahi ta’aalaa.” Meaning: “I intend the obligatory Maghrib prayer, three rak'ahs, facing the qibla, for Allah the Almighty.”

Isha intention (4 rak'ahs): أُصَلِّي فَرْضَ الْعِشَاءِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ أَدَاءً لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى — “Usholli fardhol ‘isyaa’i arba’a roka’aatin mustaqbilal qiblati adaa’an lillaahi ta’aalaa.” Meaning: “I intend the obligatory Isha prayer, four rak'ahs, facing the qibla, for Allah the Almighty.”

Congregational Prayer: Imam and Follower

When praying in congregation as a follower (makmum), the word “ma’muuman” is added before “lillaahi ta’aalaa”. Example for Maghrib as a follower: “Usholli fardhol maghribi tsalaatsa roka’aatin mustaqbilal qiblati adaa’an ma’muuman lillaahi ta’aalaa.”

When leading as imam, “ma’muuman” is replaced with “imaaman”. When praying alone (munfarid), the intention uses the plain wording without either addition, as in the examples above.

Important Notes on Intention

Remember that what matters most in intention is the sincerity of the heart, not the length of the wording. The intention is made together with the opening takbir — an intention formed after the takbir is complete does not suffice according to most scholars.
