Appointed Foreign Minister on October 1, 2026

President Prabowo Subianto formally appointed Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir as Indonesia's foreign minister at the State Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (10/1/2026). The appointment marks the rise of a career diplomat to the top of the Foreign Ministry.

Nasir, nicknamed Tata, replaced Sugiono, who had served as foreign minister since October 2024. In this cabinet reshuffle, Sugiono moved to Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

Before taking the top post, Tata had already served as deputy foreign minister since October 21, 2024, working under Sugiono.

Background and Education

Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir was born in Bangkok, Thailand, on December 30, 1971. He earned his bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom, followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Leicester.

His academic path continued in Indonesia with a master's program in international relations at the University of Indonesia. That grounding in economics and international relations has underpinned a career centered on global economic issues, development, and trade.

Before entering diplomacy, Tata worked in banking, including as an account executive at Bank Danamon in 1995-1996 and at Bank Dagang Negara in 1996-1997.

Diplomatic Career Since 1997

Nasir began his diplomatic career in 1997. Along the way he served as a Second Secretary and Indonesian negotiator at the World Trade Organization (WTO), including on agricultural trade issues.

He also served at the Directorate General of Multilateral Affairs, handling economic and development issues at the UN General Assembly. One of his best-known roles was as Foreign Ministry spokesperson from 2014 to 2019.

In 2019 he was appointed Indonesian ambassador to France, concurrently accredited to Andorra and Monaco, as well as to UNESCO in Paris. In 2021 he became ambassador and permanent representative of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York, before becoming deputy foreign minister in October 2024.

Awards and Multilateral Track Record

During his posting in France, the French government awarded him the Commandeur de la Legion d'Honneur in 2021 for his contribution to strengthening Indonesia-France bilateral relations.

His long experience in multilateral diplomacy means most of his career has intersected with international diplomacy, from world trade to UN forums. As foreign minister, he has affirmed that protecting Indonesian citizens abroad will remain his top priority.
