Taisei Marukawa Undergoes Naturalization

Dewa United player Taisei Marukawa is undergoing naturalization to become an Indonesian citizen in October 2026. The Japanese winger has submitted the required documents and could represent Indonesia if all stages are completed under FIFA rules.

Marukawa confirmed the administrative progress. "I cannot explain the process in detail, but I have submitted the required documents and am now awaiting approval," the 29-year-old said.

The news has excited Indonesia supporters. The agile winger, known for his sharp vision and scoring ability, is now one step closer to Indonesian citizenship.

Five Years Playing in Indonesia

Marukawa began his Indonesian career with Persebaya Surabaya in the 2021/2022 season, then played for PSIS Semarang from 2022 to 2024 before joining Dewa United in 2024.

Per competition records, he has 161 appearances with 37 goals and 47 assists in Indonesia — numbers that show his consistency at club level.

By regulation, Marukawa's naturalization follows the residency and service route, not the descent route, under Law No. 12 of 2006. FIFA requires residency-route players to have lived in the country for five years.

Potentially the First Japanese to Wear the Garuda Shirt

If the process is completed, Marukawa could become the first Japanese player to wear the Garuda — the nickname of Indonesia's national team — in football history.

Marukawa said his experience living in Indonesia was key to the decision. "I have lived in Indonesia for five years and truly fallen in love with this country. Everyone is so friendly," he said.

His national-team dream is no secret. "My biggest dream is to be part of the Indonesia national team. Playing for Indonesia would be a tremendous honor for me," Marukawa said.

Winning the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup has not made the Garuda squad complacent. Ahead of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, John Herdman's side are reportedly set to be reinforced by new players.

With five years of domestic experience, Marukawa offers the plus of being fully adapted to Indonesian football. Fans now wait to see when the naturalization is finalized — and when Marukawa might pull on the red-and-white jersey.
