Matcha Latte, the Hit Green Drink
Matcha latte has become a trendy favorite, especially among young people. Its beautiful green color and soft, creamy taste make it a bestseller at cafes — at prices that are not cheap.
The good news: matcha latte is very easy to make at home. With just matcha powder, sweetener, and milk, you can craft a cafe-quality drink for far less. It is also easy to customize with different flavors and toppings to suit your taste. Here is the recipe.
Matcha Latte Ingredients
For one glass, prepare 1 tablespoon matcha powder (about 2 teaspoons), 1 teaspoon honey or sugar to taste, and 250 ml milk (dairy, oat, almond, or soy). Also have 50 ml hot water around 80°C and ice cubes for the iced version.
Choose good-quality matcha powder. Premium matcha is bright green, gently aromatic, and not overly bitter. Good matcha makes all the difference in the final cup.
Steps to Make Matcha Latte
Sift the matcha into a cup so it does not clump. Add the sweetener and 1 tablespoon of hot water, whisk until fully dissolved into a smooth green paste. Pour in the remaining hot water and stir.
For the hot version, heat the milk until almost boiling, then pour into the matcha, stirring gently. For the iced version, fill a glass with ice, pour in cold milk, then slowly pour the matcha over it to form a pretty gradient layer. Stir before drinking.
Cafe-Creamy Tips and Variations
Never use boiling water to dissolve matcha — excessive heat makes it bitter. Use a milk frother or bamboo whisk (chasen) for a soft barista-like foam.
For trendy variations, try strawberry matcha latte with strawberry jam at the bottom of the glass, or a creamier matcha oat latte that suits the lactose intolerant. Dust a little matcha on top as garnish before serving, and store matcha powder in an airtight container in a cool place to preserve its aroma.
